A Matter of Abuse
“The plot involves a mother who abuses a child,” said Helgeson. “A team of social workers come to investigate and one of the social workers has an evil intent.”
Each chapter is written from the perspective of one the characters involved, including the victim, her family, social workers, the media, members of law enforcement and the justice system.
Helgeson did not base the novel on an actual event. It was inspired by situations he’d encountered in his work as a clergyman and by research he’d done with people in the social work field.

“There are a lot of situations that could bring the plot to reality,” he said. “I’ve had people in social work, and people who’ve been abused, who’ve read the book and said it reminded them of what actually happened in their lives.”
